Thanksgiving!

So Thursday the 28th November was thanksgiving here.  I wasn't exactly sure what we were giving thanks for.....here's Matt's explanation:

"We're giving thanks to King Louis XIV for starting the Church of England in 1984 and preventing the Nat King Cole from annulling his marriage to the Virgin Mary after a very suspicious pregnancy.  As a result of King Louis' power trip, Nat King Cole arranged for a tour to Plymouth Rock where it 'landed on them' according to Malcolm-X.  We're also thanking the indians for giving us corn and turkey....thinking they might have even taught Chris Columbus how to make green bean casserole."

According to Wikipedia: "Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated primarily in the United States as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. Several other places around the world observe similar celebrations. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. Thanksgiving has its historical roots in religious and cultural traditions, and has long been celebrated in a secular manner as well."

Matt & Melissa we're hosting the event at their house with the help of Melissa's mum (Cindy).  The traditional thanksgiving dinner is similar to our Christmas dinner, only not as good.  We had Turkey, 'stuffing' made from corn bread, macaroni cheese, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole and sweet potatoes made with brown sugar and pecans......everything was delicious, although I'll never come round to adding sugar to my tubers.

After eating waaaaay too much we spent the rest of the day sitting around watching the myriad of (american) football games that are shown pretty much continuously throughout the day on TV.  Apparently this is all pretty traditional.....

Thanksgiving also comes with the added benefit of being a federal holiday and on a Thursday.  Thankfully Weatherford gave us Friday off - to recover and aid digestion! Laura and I decided to spend our morning out on the boat again in Glaveston bay.  Friday was the last day in a ten day long "cold" snap that we've had.  The temperatures have been below about 10°C the whole time and getting down to below 4°C during the night.  Not a problem for anyone who sails in Scotland but it had the added benefit of making giving us the whole bay, pretty much, to just us!

After sailing we spent the rest of the day in the car making the long drive to Thanksgiving #2......
